Ten killer whales off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, became trapped in a drifting ice mass, with the possibility of being freed as the ice melts, after being immobile for an extended period. In Rausu town, located in Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture, ten killer whales floating on the surface got stuck in an ice mass. According to information obtained from local authorities, the group, seen about 1 kilometer offshore yesterday and unable to be rescued by ship due to heavy icing, disappeared today. Officials stated that after the temperature increased, partially melting the ice, including calves, the group might have been saved. In a similar incident in 2005 off the coast of Rausu town, about ten killer whales were trapped in an ice mass and perished.
