The USA and Ukraine signed a 10-year security agreement

The USA and Ukraine signed a ten-year security agreement during the G7 Summit in Italy. President of the USA Joe Biden and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a ten-year security agreement at the G7 Summit in Italy. Following the agreement, Biden and Zelensky held a joint press conference. Biden stated, ‘Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term reliable defense and deterrence capabilities and to establish lasting peace for Ukraine. Ukraine must gain the ability to defend itself against current and future attacks and be assured in this way.’ Biden mentioned that the bilateral security agreement between the USA and Ukraine, along with the $50 billion loan supported by G7 countries and three new measures against Russia, would establish a ‘stronger foundation’ for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. He expressed that these three major steps would demonstrate that Putin cannot erode and divide the Western alliance by playing for time. Biden said, ‘We will stand by Ukraine until victory is achieved.’
Zelensky stated that the agreement demonstrated the reliability of the USA’s support for Ukraine’s independence. He said, ‘Today is truly a historic day. We have signed the strongest agreement between the USA and Ukraine since our independence.’ Zelensky emphasized that the agreement creates a bridge for Ukraine’s NATO membership and defined the agreement as supporting Ukraine’s prospective NATO membership and serving as a bridge for it.
Described as ‘historic’ by the White House, the text of the agreement includes provisions for high-level US and Ukrainian officials to meet within 24 hours in case of an armed attack or threat against Ukraine, consult on the response, and determine additional defense measures needed by Ukraine. The text of the agreement reaffirms US support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and acknowledges the need for continuous investments in significant military power, robust military capabilities, and defense industry infrastructure in line with NATO standards for Ukraine’s security.
The first day of the G7 Summit in Italy’s southern Puglia region on June 13-15 focused on Ukraine. The leaders started the three-day summit with a family photo session. During the summit held at the Borgo Egnazia Hotel in the Itria Valley, the leaders watched a flag demonstration by parachutists in the area. The first day of the G7 Summit, which brings together the world’s seven largest economies, was marked by the bilateral security agreement between the USA and Ukraine and the decision to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan through the use of interest income from frozen Russian assets mostly held in European banks.
