Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced that he will resign from his position next week.
In a statement made through his social media account, Billström announced his resignation. He said, “With a mix of sadness and pride, I informed the Prime Minister today that I will leave the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs at the opening of Parliament next week.”
Expressing that he did not make his decision to resign lightly, Billström conveyed that he has held various positions over the past 25 years, including 10 years as a minister, and added, “I want to say that I am very happy and proud of what we have achieved in these two years. First of all, after a long and sometimes challenging process, Sweden has finally joined NATO.”
Billström pointed out that the current government has made a historic reorganization of Sweden’s security policy since World War II, stating, “We have established a long-term policy to counter Russia’s expansion. The situation in the Middle East is also serious, and Sweden is working to stabilize the situation in collaboration with the EU, the USA, and other countries. In the long term, the only reasonable solution is a two-state solution.”
Billström indicated that he will completely leave politics and stated that he has not yet decided what he will do next. The 50-year-old Billström has been serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since October 2022.
