In a joint statement released during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Germany, it was noted that the two countries will begin working on a bilateral cooperation agreement to be signed next year.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his visit to Berlin. Following the meeting, a joint statement was issued regarding the deepening and development of relations between the UK and Germany. The joint statement emphasized that Germany and the UK share a strong friendship, common values, and mutual interests, stating, “We have been close partners in Europe and long-standing allies in NATO. Today, in light of the common challenges our countries face, we believe it is time to elevate our bilateral relations to a higher level. To this end, we are beginning work on a bilateral cooperation agreement and will conduct intergovernmental consultations to sign it in early next year.”

It was highlighted that the agreement would reflect the closest partner status of the two countries in Europe by providing the strongest possible collaboration on the most important issues for the citizens of the UK and Germany.

The document noted that the Foreign Ministries, in close consultation with the Prime Minister’s offices and relevant ministries, would coordinate efforts to negotiate the bilateral agreement, stating, “In this context, we welcome the rapid progress being made on a new defense agreement between our Defense Ministries. This agreement will form the foundation of the upcoming bilateral cooperation agreement.”

“We are determined to strengthen Europe’s defense”

The statement included the common priorities of the two countries, such as cooperation in foreign policy, economic growth, industrial transformation, collaboration among law enforcement agencies, combating irregular migration, youth and education, energy security, climate and nature policy, development policy, transportation and infrastructure, as well as technology, research, and innovation.

The text emphasized that Germany and the UK are committed to defending and promoting peace and security in Europe, stating, “We are determined to deter Russia, continue our support for Ukraine, and strengthen Europe’s defense.”
