Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev received Michael Carpenter, Special Advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden and Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council.
Michael Carpenter, Special Advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden and Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council, arrived in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for various discussions. During his visit, Carpenter was received by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. In the inter-delegation meeting between Carpenter and Aliyev, regional, economic, and bilateral cooperation issues were discussed.
Carpenter stated that the United States also supports the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the near future, saying, “There are historic opportunities to sign a peace agreement under the current conditions. The signing of this agreement will provide broad opportunities for regional cooperation. The U.S. has strong support for advancing this process.”
“Azerbaijan supports regional peace”
Emphasizing that the five fundamental principles forming the peace agreement were initiated by Azerbaijan, Aliyev stated, “Azerbaijan supports regional peace. The fact that Armenia conveyed its final proposals regarding the peace agreement text 70 days after we sent them, raises some questions about its intentions to advance the process. The main obstacle to the peace agreement is Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan based on its constitution. However, Azerbaijan will continue to take decisive steps to advance the process.”
