In Mexico, a country in North America, the capital Mexico City and 10 other cities experienced record high temperatures. The effects of global warming continue to increase worldwide. Due to the ongoing heatwave in Mexico, record temperatures were recorded in 10 cities. In Mexico City, the temperature reached 34.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday, breaking the temperature record. In the neighboring city of Puebla, the temperature rose to 35.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The all-time highest temperature recorded in the city was 34.3 degrees Celsius in 1947, and after 77 years, the record was broken. In Ciudad Victoria, a border state across from Texas in the United States, the temperature reached 47.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, surpassing the previous record set in 1998. Other cities where temperatures reached record levels include Toluca (31.9), Cuernavaca (39.3), Merida (43.5), Campeche (43.3), Progreso (41.5), Torreon (43.4), and Queretaro (37.6). The Ministry of Health in Mexico stated that between March 17 and May 4, 7 people lost their lives due to the heatwave. Moreover, due to the scorching temperatures causing high demand that strained the national electricity grid, 21 out of 32 states in the country were left without electricity on Tuesday, prompting the National Energy Control Center (CENACE) to declare a state of emergency. The primary reasons for the global increase in temperatures are attributed to climate change caused by human activities and the El Nino weather phenomenon.
