An explosion occurred at the Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines, prompting an increase in the alert level in the region. The eruption took place at 18:50 local time on the central island of Negros, Philippines. Following the dispersal of volcanic gases and ash up to 5 kilometers, the alert level was raised. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced that the alert level was raised to level two due to volcanic activities at the Kanlaon Volcano on the Negros Islands. The statement also mentioned that small-scale tectonic earthquakes were recorded in the region before the volcanic eruption. Director Teresito Bacolcol of Phivolcs stated, “The initial explosions are volcanic eruptions, but they could turn into more dangerous magmatic explosions.” Bacolcol also mentioned that volcanic ash rose into the sky as smoke after the eruption, advising the public to wear masks. Additionally, the Negros Provincial Government issued a statement urging citizens to take precautions against ash fall and to use masks when outdoors.
