Palestinians who took shelter from Israel’s attacks in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip are struggling to meet their housing and nutrition needs in Deir al-Balah. Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip continue relentlessly. Palestinians who fled the attacks on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and sought refuge in Deir al-Balah are trying to survive in search of security. Displaced people are facing difficulties in their daily lives due to the infrastructure being dysfunctional as a result of Israel’s intense bombardment, streets filled with sewage water, high cost of living, closure of most bakeries, and lack of drinking water. Muhammad Ashraf, who moved to Deir al-Balah city, stated, ‘We call on world countries to find solutions to the problems of the Gaza Strip. Today, I bought bread for 20 shekels (5.47 dollars). This is very expensive, the reason for this is the closure of border crossings and the prevention of fuel entry. People are dying here. People do not have money to buy basic supplies. We urge the whole world to stop the war.’ In addition, due to the lack of suitable land to stay or set up tents in Deir al-Balah where the population is concentrated, the displaced people are forced to set up their tents near the sea, close to sewage areas. Amin Daher, who had to leave his home on October 7 because he lived near the Nahal Oz area, said, ‘This is the 6th time I have been displaced. What is our fault that we endure this pain, and how long will we continue to wait? The suffering we have been experiencing for eight months continues. We are living among waste, sewage, and cannot find drinking water. Children got sick, we got sick too.’ Daher called on the whole world to stop the attacks in order to return to his destroyed home and set up a tent there. According to the latest data from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), about 815,000 people had to leave Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s attacks.
