Israel shot humanitarian aid workers in Gaza: 7 dead
Seven volunteers from the international aid organization “World Central Kitchen (WCK)” lost their lives in the attack Israel carried out on the Gaza Strip.
Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip indiscriminately. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted vehicles belonging to the humanitarian aid organization “World Central Kitchen (WCK)” in Deir el-Balah. Seven volunteers of the aid organization lost their lives in the attack. In a statement issued by WCK, it was stated that the team was traveling in three vehicles, two of which were armored and carrying the WCK logo, in a conflict-free zone, and they were targeted as they were leaving the warehouse in Deir el-Balah, where over 100 tons of food aid brought to Gaza by sea was being unloaded. The deceased were from Australia, Poland, the UK, the US-Canada dual citizenship, and Palestinians. The statement also mentioned, “We are suspending our activities in the region as World Central Kitchen.”.
Erin Gore, a senior executive at WCK, said, “This is not just an attack on WCK but an attack on humanitarian organizations that operate in the most dire situations where food is used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable.” WCK founder Jose Andres stated, “The Israeli government must stop these indiscriminate attacks. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, killing civilians and aid workers, and using food as a weapon. Innocent lives should no longer be lost.”
WCK shared a video of meal preparation a week ago
It was revealed that Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who lost his life in the attack, and other volunteers had shared a video of meal preparation in Deir el-Balah a week ago.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated in his remarks that the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom in the attack was “unacceptable.” Offering condolences to Frankcom’s family, Prime Minister Albanese stated that contact had been made with the Israeli ambassador.
Call for investigation from the US
Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the US National Security Council (NSC), expressed deep sorrow over the attack in her statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the attack in Gaza that resulted in the loss of lives of WCK aid workers. Humanitarian aid workers delivering urgently needed assistance must be protected. We call on Israel to promptly investigate what happened.”
“Investigation launched”
An announcement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that an investigation had been launched into the attack that resulted in the loss of lives of aid workers. The statement defended that the Israeli army made great efforts to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and fully cooperated and coordinated with WCK to support efforts to provide food and humanitarian aid to the region.
