Reports in the Spanish press indicate that a Russian pilot who sought asylum in Ukraine last year was shot dead.
The Russian pilot who sought asylum in Ukraine was shot dead in Spain. Reports in the Spanish press indicate that Maxim Kuzminov, the Russian pilot who sought asylum in Ukraine with a Mi-8 helicopter last August, was shot dead. According to the reports, Kuzminov’s body was found in a garage near the town of Villajoyosa in southern Spain on February 13th, with multiple gunshot wounds. It was reported that Kuzminov had been living in Spain under a different name with a Ukrainian passport. The reports also stated that the police found a burnt-out vehicle in another town near the town where the attack took place and announced that two suspects were being sought.
A spokesperson from Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed to the press that Kuzminov had died in Spain but did not specify the cause of death. Spanish police confirmed that the lifeless body of a person shot dead was found in Villajoyosa but did not disclose the identity of the person.

Various organizations, including the Ukrainian government, announced that Russian soldiers would be rewarded with money and citizenship if they surrendered their weapons. The Ukrainian defense industry conglomerate UKROBORONPROM announced that Russian pilots who delivered their aircraft to Ukraine would receive a reward of $1 million. Viktor Andrusiv, Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, announced via his social media account on March 22, 2022, that a Russian soldier surrendered to Ukraine with a tank, stating that the surrendered Russian soldier would receive a reward of $10,000 at the end of the war and could apply for Ukrainian citizenship.
