The 74-year-old former Prime Minister Shinawatra, who was arrested in August last year due to his prison sentence, was conditionally released today. It was reported that Shinawatra, whose prison sentence was reduced from 8 years to 1 year due to health problems, entered his residence in the capital Bangkok by car, accompanied by his younger daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who is also the leader of the ruling Pheu Thai party. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed happiness for Thaksin’s release and emphasized that it was in accordance with the law. Thaksin Shinawatra’s release sparked controversy in the country, with Senator Somchai Swangkarn stating, “Is he too sick? Parole? What illness? Sleep peacefully, Thai justice” in his statement.
Overthrown in a coup
Thaksin Shinawatra, aged 74, who served as prime minister for two terms in Thailand, was ousted in a military coup in 2006. After the coup, Thaksin, who was sentenced to 8 years in prison for abuse of power and corruption, fled the country in 2008. Thaksin was sent to prison after returning from Dubai to Thailand on August 22, 2023, and was transferred to a police hospital on the same day.
