According to unofficial results of the elections in Indonesia, the new president is Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto. Today, Indonesians went to the polls to determine the president, members of parliament, and local representatives. After the closing of the polls at 13:00 local time, the new president to replace Joko Widodo was announced in the country, with 90% of the votes counted. According to unofficial results, former general and Defense Minister, 72-year-old Prabowo Subianto secured at least 58.5% of the votes to become the country’s new leader. Subianto’s rivals, two former governors Anies Baswedan received around 25%, and Ganjar Pranowo received approximately 17% of the votes, losing the race. Speaking at a sports complex in the capital Jakarta, Subianto stated, “This is the victory of all Indonesian people. However, despite our victory, we should not be arrogant; we should remain humble. I will embrace all parties. It will be our responsibility to protect all Indonesian people, regardless of their tribes, ethnic groups, races, religions, or social backgrounds.” Subianto expressed satisfaction with the swift election results but emphasized the need to wait for the official results that the National Election Committee will announce in March. The new president will be inaugurated on October 20th.
