Xi Jinping’s Visit to France

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as part of his contacts in France. Xi, in his first European tour after 5 years, held important meetings in the capital of France, Paris.

• Macron and Xi Jinping: Macron stated that they would take bold decisions to protect the economy and security of the European Union. He called for fair rules in commercial relations and emphasized the need for a more decisive coordination in the Ukraine-Russia war.
• Von der Leyen and Xi Jinping: Von der Leyen expressed Europe’s sensitivity to products made in China with state subsidies. She voiced concerns about unfair competition and stated her belief that China could play a role in easing Russia’s nuclear threats.

Xi Jinping highlighted in the meetings that China’s energy industry has eased inflation pressures by increasing global supply. He warned that trade disputes could lead to increases in customs duties and criticized the increasing investigations by the European Union into state subsidies for China.
