United Nations: Evacuation of Rafah by Israel May Constitute a War Crime

The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office warned that Israel’s order to evacuate 100,000 people in the city of Rafah could be considered a war crime.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk described Israel’s evacuation order in the eastern part of Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip where 1.5 million Palestinians seek refuge, as “inhumane.” Türk emphasized that this situation could expose Palestinians to further danger and misery. He stated, “Gazans are already struggling with bombs, diseases, and even hunger. As Israel’s military operations in Rafah intensify, they are once again asked to move. This is an inhumane situation.”

The UN Human Rights Office stated that Israeli attacks have turned other parts of Gaza into rubble and there is no area outside Rafah where Palestinians could seek shelter. It was highlighted that the displacement of civilians is prohibited by international humanitarian law, stating that such actions are subject to strict legal requirements except for certain exceptions, and failing to meet these requirements could constitute a war crime.
