Former President of the United States (US) and Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed that Ukraine’s advances into Russian territory could lead to a world war. Trump stated, “Look at what’s happening in Ukraine. They are advancing on Russian territory. The third world war is going to break out.”

Speaking at the US National Guard Association conference in Detroit, Trump argued that the current chaos in many parts of the world began with the US’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“The most disgraceful day in American history”

Trump described the day the US withdrew from Afghanistan as the most disgraceful day in American history, saying that this development triggered conflicts around the world. He emphasized that the shame of the withdrawal from Afghanistan shattered trust in the US, saying, “This is why Russia entered Ukraine. The October 7 attack in Israel happened for this reason. It’s because we are not respected. We are not respected.”

Trump stated, “We needed to withdraw honorably and strongly. Bagram Air Base should never have been left behind. This is one of the largest air bases in the world, just an hour away from where China produces nuclear weapons. We left this place, we left everything. China took over here. This is now under Chinese control; can you imagine that?”

“Afghanistan became one of the world’s largest arms dealers”

Trump emphasized that the US left $85 billion worth of weapons and military equipment in Afghanistan, stating, “Do you know that Afghanistan has become one of the world’s largest arms dealers? They are selling the weapons we foolishly left behind. We left behind $85 billion worth of new tanks, planes, and even binoculars. They couldn’t fight at night because they didn’t have night vision capabilities. Now they can fight. It’s unbelievable. These people who allowed such a thing to happen to our country are fools. We have become the laughing stock of the world.”

He issued a warning about a third world war

Trump stated, “The whole world is in chaos. If something is not done quickly, we will face World War III. Due to nuclear power and other current capabilities, this will not resemble previous world wars.” He suggested that Ukraine’s advances into Russian territory could lead to a world war, saying, “Look at what’s happening in Ukraine. They are advancing on Russian territory. The third world war is going to break out.” Trump emphasized that during his presidency, he prevented wars and kept American soldiers safe, recalling that he ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 American troops at the Turkey-Syria border. He said, “I called one of our generals, asking if having 5,000 troops between an army of 400,000 on one side and 300,000 on the other could be effective. They said, ‘It won’t be good, sir.’ I told them to withdraw them immediately.”

“We have run out of ammunition”

Trump stated that the US has given all its ammunition to other countries, primarily Ukraine, and has run out of ammunition, saying, “We have run out of ammunition. We had so many missiles that we didn’t know if we could use them all. We were organizing new depots because all our depots were full. Now we have come to a point where we have no ammunition left again.”

“NATO’s minimum defense spending should be raised to 3%”

Trump emphasized that the US is trying to cover the gap created by other countries’ defense spending in NATO and said that during his presidency, he would insist that NATO member countries spend at least 3% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense. Trump stated, “Our allies must fairly bear their share of the burden. All NATO member countries that spend significantly less than 2% of their GDP on their armies are putting our forces in a difficult situation. The side that pays the gap is us, the helping side. I will insist that every NATO member country spend 3% to eliminate threats.”
