The opposition won the elections in Lithuania

The opposition party, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), won the elections in Lithuania. The party, which secured 52 seats in the 141-seat parliament, will form a coalition government with the Union of Democrats for Lithuania (Vardan Lietuvos) and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (Lietuvos Valstieciu ir Zaliuju Sajunga).
The LSDP won the second round of elections held today to determine the remaining 63 members of parliament. The party, which elected 20 parliamentarians in the first round, gained an additional 32 seats in today’s elections. Following the LSDP, the ruling Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) secured a total of 28 parliamentarians, while the third place was taken by Remigijus Zemaitaitis’s Nemunas Šafağı (Nemuno Ausra) party, which expressed anti-Semitic views, with 20 parliamentarians. The Lithuanian Central Election Commission announced that voter turnout was 41.31%, a decrease of 11% compared to the first round held on October 14. Other parties that qualified for parliament include the Union of Democrats for Lithuania with 14, the Liberal Union with 12, and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union with 8 parliamentarians.
In a statement following the unofficial preliminary results, LSDP leader Vilija Blinkeviciute expressed gratitude to the Lithuanian citizens who voted for them, stating, “The election results show that Lithuanians want change, that they want a completely different government, regardless of whether they live in a village, town, or city.” Vilija Blinkeviciute said that they will hold talks with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and the Union of Democrats for Lithuania in the coming days to form a left coalition government.
