The German Parliament rejected the shipment of Taurus missiles to Ukraine
The proposal for the shipment of German-made Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine voted on today in the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag), was rejected with 495 votes against out of 690 members of parliament.
While the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, Germany’s support for Ukraine, second only to that of the United States, has hit a snag this time. The proposal submitted to the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) by the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) parties in Berlin, requesting the shipment of domestic Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, was voted on today. In the voting, in which a total of 690 members of parliament participated, the proposal was rejected with 495 votes against, 190 votes in favor, and 5 abstentions. Members of parliament opposing the delivery argued that this proposal had the potential to escalate the conflict and drag Germany into war.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously stated that German soldiers should also be deployed in Ukraine as part of the shipment for the delivery of long-range weapon systems to Ukraine and had expressed opposition to the shipment of Taurus missiles. However, members of parliament had called on the government last month to send more long-range weapons to Ukraine but had previously rejected a call from the opposition for the shipment of Taurus missiles.
