Reaction from Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the U.S.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Lin Jian reacted to the U.S. warship patrolling the Taiwan Strait, stating, ‘Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing the whole of China.’

Emphasis on China’s One China Principle

China expressed its disapproval of the U.S. warship patrolling the Taiwan Strait less than two weeks before Taiwan’s new leader Lai Ching-te took office. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that there is only one China in the world, stating, ‘Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing the whole of China.’

U.S. and Taiwan Relations

Jian highlighted that the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 clearly indicates that there can only be one seat representing China in the UN, pointing out that the U.S. by diluting the ‘One China’ principle encourages separatist activities.

Statements and Reactions

While the Taiwan Ministry of Defense described the passage of the U.S. ship through the Taiwan Strait as a normal occurrence, the U.S. Navy stated that the passage was in accordance with international law and routine.

China’s State of Alert

In a statement by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, it was mentioned that the forces are on high alert and will resolutely defend national sovereignty, security, regional peace, and stability.
