Spain’s Catalonia region is heading to the polls for regional elections. Regional elections are being held today in the Catalonia Autonomous Region of Spain. With a total of 9 parties competing in the election, more than 5.7 million voters will elect 135 seats.

People in the Catalonia region of Spain are going to the polls for regional elections. Today, regional elections are being held in the Catalonia Autonomous Region of Spain. In the election where a total of 9 parties are competing, more than 5.7 million voters will elect their representatives for the 135-seat parliament. The voting process, which started at 09:00 local time, will end at 20:00, and the first results are expected to be announced at 22:00.
Catalans will choose between the former leader of the Catalonia region Carles Puigdemont, who led the independence referendum held in 2017 and went into exile in Belgium due to the lawsuits filed against him, returning to office or the anti-independence government led by the Socialist Party remaining in power.
9 candidates are competing. The candidates include Salvador Illa from the Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Pere Aragones from the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Carles Puigdemont from the pro-independence Catalan party Junts, Ignacio Garriga from the right-wing party Vox, Laia Estrada from the Popular Unity Candidacy Party (CUP), Jéssica Albiach from the Sumar Commons, Carlos Carrizosa from Cs, Alejandro Fernndez from the People’s Party (PP), and Slvia Orriols from the Catalonia Democratic Union.
Puigdemont is expecting to return to the country. Puigdemont, conducting his election campaign from the south of France, promised to bring independence back to the agenda during the campaign. Puigdemont plans to return to Spain thanks to the amnesty bill introduced by the government.
Prime Minister Sanchez conducted the election campaign with Illa. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez conducted the election campaign together with the Socialist candidate Salvador Illa. Sanchez, in his final rally held in Barcelona, stated, ‘We need a change on May 12th, and only Salvador Illa can lead this change.’
