Swiss Confederation President Viola Amherd announced the joint declaration at a press conference following the Ukraine Peace Conference held in the town of Buergenstock.

The Ukraine Peace Conference, which started yesterday in Switzerland, has concluded. Following the conference attended by 92 countries and 57 leaders in the town of Buergenstock located next to Lake Lucerne in the canton of Nidwalden, a press conference was held. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and Swiss Confederation President Viola Amherd participated in the meeting where the joint declaration was announced. Amherd stated that the majority of participating states agreed on jointly formulated positions for the future peace process and next steps. Evaluating the declaration issued from the conference as a strong signal from the international community for peace based on international law and the UN Charter, Amherd expressed that the results of the Buergenstock summit constitute the first significant step towards a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Amherd stated that the discussions focused on 3 main issues: ‘Nuclear security, food security, and the humanitarian dimension of the conflict involving war prisoners, arbitrarily detained civilians, and abducted children. An agreement on these issues would be beneficial for both sides, as they are conducive to building trust among the parties in conflict.’

‘The declaration has been supported by the majority of participating states.’

Amherd emphasized the significance of these issues for many countries, saying, ‘Countries from different regions of the world participated in the discussions, sharing their experiences and proposing solutions. The joint declaration issued from the Buergenstock summit has been supported by the majority of participating states.’

Amherd mentioned that the conference reflects the desire of states to contribute to the peace process, stating, ‘The positions taken in the 3 discussion areas lay the foundation of trust.’

Amherd also highlighted the need to involve all sides of the conflict in the process, stating, ‘Switzerland is hosting a summit of this magnitude for the first time. The wide participation from all regions of the world is an expression of trust in Switzerland, made possible through Switzerland’s global diplomatic network.’

Stressing that Switzerland will continue to play an active role in the upcoming steps, Amherd praised the cooperation with participating states and expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the smooth conduct of the international event.
