John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator of the US National Security Council, announced that Israel has pledged that the operation in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip will be limited. Kirby stated that Israel’s primary goal of the operation is to prevent weapons smuggling and financial support to Gaza.
Referring to the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, Kirby expressed hope that Hamas and Israel can reach a compromise on remaining issues and reach an agreement soon. Kirby said, ‘Considering the positions of both sides, I believe they can make progress towards an agreement and we will take the necessary steps to support this process.’
Kirby mentioned that Hamas proposed changes to the original offer made by Israel and announced that William Burns, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), will participate in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Cairo. Kirby added, ‘Everyone is at the table, and this is a significant development.’
