Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Energy Transformation with Zhang Jianhua, the President of the National Energy Administration of China. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, after his visit to the United States, held important meetings in China two weeks later. Minister Bayraktar first met with officials of SPIC company, one of the largest energy companies with investments in Turkey. In a statement on social media regarding the meeting, Bayraktar conveyed the message, ‘We discussed our projects in the fields of nuclear and renewable energy in line with our country’s 2053 net zero target and determined the roadmap.’
Bayraktar stated ‘We will enhance cooperation’ during his visit where he also met with Wang Guanghua, the Minister of Natural Resources of China. Bayraktar shared on his social media account about the meeting, saying ‘In our meeting, we agreed on developing our existing and potential cooperation in natural resources and mining fields, particularly critical minerals and rare earth elements, between our country and the People’s Republic of China, both in our countries and in third countries.’
‘Aim to implement concrete projects in the shortest time’ Minister Bayraktar, who met with the President of the National Energy Administration Zhang Jianhua over a working lunch, focused on nuclear energy and renewable energy. Following the meeting, a ‘Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Energy Transformation’ was signed between the two countries. After the signing, Bayraktar stated on social media, ‘With the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Energy Transformation, we aim to implement concrete projects in the shortest time.’
Minister Bayraktar welcomed senior executives of Chinese energy companies at the Turkish Embassy in Beijing, met with representatives of Chinese financial institutions and energy exchanges. During his meeting with the President of TCC Company Liang Jun Xiang and his delegation, who have investments in Turkey, Bayraktar discussed new investment opportunities in Turkey, especially critical minerals. He also evaluated the possibilities for both conventional and small modular reactors that could be built in Turkey with representatives of CNOS, one of China’s leading nuclear companies. He discussed different investment models for establishing a battery storage factory in Turkey with a delegation from CATL, one of the world’s leading companies in energy storage systems.
Minister Bayraktar discussed potential projects that could complement existing investments with Wang Bo, the President of CMEC Company, which has carried out significant projects in Turkey with both private and public institutions such as Eti Maden and BOTAŞ. He also explored investment opportunities in large-scale renewable energy, green hydrogen, and mining sectors in Turkey with representatives from ENERGY CHINA and POWERCHINA, important groups in China.
Minister Bayraktar initiated the Energy and Climate Dialogue Program between the two countries with his counterpart Jennifer Granholm in Washington, the capital of the United States on May 8-9. Bayraktar also attended the signing ceremony of an agreement between BOTAŞ and the U.S. energy company ExxonMobil, which will enable Turkey to supply approximately 2.5 million tons of LNG annually for ten years.
