The Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who made a statement regarding the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, announced that an agreement was reached on the withdrawal of Russian forces deployed to some areas in Armenia in 2020 upon Armenia’s request.
Details of the Meeting
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that during the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the Kremlin Palace yesterday, the activities of the Russian army and border guards in Armenia were discussed.
Decision on Withdrawal of Military Forces
Peskov expressed that an agreement was reached between the leaders on the withdrawal of Russian army and border guards from some regions of Armenia. He said, “In the fall of 2020, upon the request of the Armenian side, our soldiers and border guards were deployed to some areas in Armenia. Today, Pashinyan stated that due to changing conditions, there is no longer a need for this, so President Putin agreed, and the decision was made for the withdrawal of our soldiers and border guards.”
Responsibilities of Border Guards
Peskov also emphasized that during the meeting, the Armenian side requested the Russian border guards to continue their duty on Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran. He stated, “Upon the request of the Armenian side, our border guards will remain on the Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Iran borders and continue to fulfill their duties.”
Withdrawal Process of Russian Forces
According to reports based on Armenian officials by the Russian press, Putin and Pashinyan agreed on the withdrawal of Russian forces from 5 regions in Armenia.
Furthermore, in recent days, Pashinyan announced the approval of the decision regarding the withdrawal of Russian troops and border guards along the Azerbaijan contact line and the Russian troops stationed at Zvartnots International Airport in the Armenian capital Yerevan. The withdrawal of Russian border guards from Zvartnots International Airport is expected to start from August 1st.
