As part of the 2024 Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year, a year-long festival that will increase cultural exchange between the two countries through events and activities.

Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year

As part of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Hungary, the activities of the ‘2024 Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year’ continue. Within the framework of the theme ‘A Century of Friendship and Cooperation,’ the ‘Cultural Year’ events held in Hungary have exceeded 50 in four months. It is aimed to organize 100 events in the 100th year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Events and Participation

Cultural diplomacy activities spanning a whole year in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Budapest are realized with significant contributions from our country’s institutions and organizations, especially the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Yunus Emre Institute, TIKA, Directorate for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, and Maarif Foundation. In the first 4 months of the year, 50 events held in four different cities of Hungary to introduce Turkish culture, art, and cuisine reached more than 70,000 people in total.

Upcoming Events and Plans

With concerts, theaters, exhibitions, conferences, and talks in Budapest as well as in the cities of Veszprem, Szeged, and Tokaj, by the end of April, half of the target of 100 events has been reached. Among the events, large-scale productions such as the play ‘Motherland’ by the State Theatres General Directorate and ‘Guldestan’ staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, as well as the concert of our world-renowned artist Ömer Faruk Tekbilek, received great acclaim from the Hungarian public.

Closing and Conclusion

Gülsan Karanis Ekşioğlu, Turkey’s Ambassador to Budapest, reminded that Hungary will take over the EU Presidency as of July, expressing that in the second half of the ‘2024 Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year,’ they will focus on other regions of Hungary. The cultural year calendar also includes events where Turkish artists will visit different cities. The opening of the ‘2024 Turkish-Hungarian Cultural Year’ was marked by a gala event honored by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan together with the Hungarian President and Prime Minister during their visit to Budapest on December 18, 2023. The closing event is planned to be held in Turkey at the end of the year.
