Air pollution in Thailand: Institutions instructed to work from home
Due to increasing air pollution in Thailand, municipal employees in the capital Bangkok have been instructed to work from home for 2 days. Air pollution in Bangkok and surrounding cities in Thailand has reached dangerous levels. According to IQAir, a Switzerland-based air quality monitoring agency, the level of air pollution in Bangkok is 15 times higher than the level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to high pollution, Bangkok has become the 8th most polluted city in the world today. Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said in a statement to journalists that the main cause of the increase in air pollution is the burning of crops. Srettha stated that another cause of pollution is traffic congestion, but he emphasized that this is a factor that can be controlled. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt instructed municipal employees to work from home to reduce pollution caused by traffic and called on other institutions to work from home as well.
