The US Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump can participate in the Republican Party’s primaries in Colorado, scheduled for tomorrow.
The US Supreme Court ruled on former President Donald Trump’s appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court overturned the decision to remove Trump’s name from the ballot papers by ruling that he could participate in the Republican Party’s primaries in the state of Colorado tomorrow. The Court stated that the Colorado Supreme Court had made a wrong decision based on the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, emphasizing that it is clear that the rules for applying the 14th Amendment should be set by Congress, not the states. In a unanimous decision in the court, it was stated, “We conclude that the states can disqualify individuals who are or are attempting to be in state positions. However, states do not have the authority to apply Section 3 of the Constitution, especially regarding federal authorities, including the presidency.”

“A great victory for America”
Minutes after the decision, Trump made a statement on his social media account, saying, “A great victory for America!!!”

What happened?
The Colorado Supreme Court had ruled on December 19th that Trump should be removed from the ballot papers in the primaries in the state due to his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. The decision stated that since Trump was disqualified from running, it would not be appropriate for him to be listed as a candidate in the Republican Party’s primaries in the state. While the decision would not take effect until January 4th, Trump appealed the decision to the US Supreme Court last Wednesday. In the dossier submitted to the court by Trump’s lawyers, it was stated that the decision of the Colorado Supreme Court was incorrect and that it misinterpreted the relevant constitutional provisions.

Victory in Michigan
Trump, who was previously disqualified from the primaries in Michigan, also appealed the decision. Trump’s appeal was accepted, and it was announced that his name would appear on the ballot papers in Michigan. Trump had a clear lead over his only competitor, Nikki Haley, in the primaries where Republican candidates competed in the state on February 28th, and he had managed to garner voter support in all 5 primaries he had entered.

Trump was disqualified in Illinois and Maine
Trump was also disqualified from the primaries in Maine and Illinois due to his role in the Capitol Building riot. With the decision of the US Supreme Court, it is expected that the decisions of Maine and Illinois states to remove Trump’s name from the ballot papers in the primaries will also be overturned.
