Trump barred from primaries in Illinois
Former US President Donald Trump has been barred from the primary elections in the state of Illinois, where Republican candidates will compete.
Another state in the US has barred former President Donald Trump from primaries. Tracie Porter, the Cook County District Judge in Illinois, ruled to remove Donald Trump from the ballot in the primaries on March 19, where Republican candidates will compete, due to his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Congress building. Porter delayed the decision, considering the possibility of Trump’s appeal. A final decision will be made tomorrow.
Decisions expected in two states
Trump was also barred from primaries in the states of Colorado and Maine due to his role in the Capitol riot in 2021, in accordance with the 14th Amendment, Section 3, of the Constitution. While Trump appealed both decisions, his applications have not yet been finalized.
He had won in Michigan
Previously barred from primaries in the state of Michigan, Trump had appealed the decision. Trump’s appeal was accepted, and it was announced that his name would be included on the ballots in Michigan. Trump had a clear lead over his sole rival Nikki Haley in the primaries where Republican candidates competed on February 28 in the state, having secured the support of voters in all 5 primaries he has entered so far.
Capitol riot
Far-right groups and supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building during a session on January 6, 2021, where the victory of Joe Biden, who won the presidential election in November 2020, was to be certified. During the hours-long violent events, five people lost their lives, and hundreds were injured.
