The “Catalan separatists amnesty bill” was not accepted by the Spanish Parliament
In the voting held in the Spanish Parliament, the “Catalan separatists amnesty bill” proposed by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s party, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), was rejected with 179 “no” votes against 171 “yes” votes. The controversial amnesty bill, which was voted on in the parliament consisting of 350 seats, was rejected with 179 “no” votes against 171 “yes” votes.
The Together for Catalonia (JxCat) party voted “no” to the bill, stating that it did not provide sufficient protection to politicians investigated for crimes related to terrorism. JxCat Spokesperson Miriam Nogueras said, “We cannot allow the Catalan independence movement to be subjected to the whims of a politicized Spanish judiciary.”
The People’s Party (PP) and the far-right Vox, who also did not support the bill, will be sent to the committee for review to be presented to the parliament again within a month.
The amnesty bill envisages pardoning around 400 separatist Catalan politicians and NGO representatives who have been convicted or are still undergoing legal proceedings following the illegal referendum held on November 9, 2014, and the referendum processes on October 1, 2017, related to independence attempts in Catalonia.
