The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported that more than 87,000 children were vaccinated on the first day of the polio vaccination campaign launched in the Gaza Strip.
Moussa Abed, the Director of Primary Health Services at the Gaza Ministry of Health, had announced that the vaccination campaign began following the detection of a polio case in the Gaza Strip. The vaccination campaign launched in Gaza continues on its second day. In a statement made today, UNRWA announced that the first dose of the polio vaccine has been administered to over 87,000 children in the vaccination campaign being conducted in Gaza. In a social media statement, UNRWA stated, “Efforts continue to provide this important vaccine to children, but what they need most is a ceasefire.”
The vaccination campaign is being carried out at 160 locations, including schools, hospitals, and medical centers, with the goal of vaccinating 640,000 children in the second round starting on September 17.
On Thursday, Israel agreed to halt conflicts for 3 days, for 8 hours each day, in specific areas of Gaza to ensure that at least 90% of children under the age of 10, totaling at least 2,700 health workers, are vaccinated.
