The capital city of Tehran witnessed a gathering of people to honor the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the delegation who lost their lives in a helicopter crash. The commemoration event at Valiasr Square in the capital started with the recitation of the Quran. Iranians attending the event couldn’t hold back their tears, holding banners saying ‘Carry greetings to Suleimaniya’, ‘I am proud to have voted for a martyr’, and carrying photos of Raisi and the Iranian Foreign Minister Huseyin Emir Abdullahian who lost their lives in the crash.
National mourning was declared for 5 days in Iran. The religious leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed his condolences to the Iranian people and declared 5 days of national mourning in the country. In his message, Khamenei conveyed that according to Article 131 of the Constitution, the First Deputy President Mohammed Muhbir was given the presidential powers for a period of 50 days.
Helicopter crash: After a meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the Azerbaijan-Iran border, the helicopter carrying Raisi and the delegation made a crash landing on the return journey in the Dizmar forest between the villages of Berazin and Erdesiri in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Throughout the night, search and rescue efforts led by Iranian officials towards the location identified by a Turkish Akinci UAV in the early morning resulted in finding the wreckage of the helicopter. The search and rescue operations succeeded in recovering the bodies of Raisi and the delegation members involved in the crash.
