Palestinian Prime Minister Shtayyeh resigns from office
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced his resignation from office in order to ensure broad consensus among Palestinians on political arrangements.
While attacks on the Gaza Strip by Israel continued, news of the resignation came from the Palestinian leadership. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh stated in a statement today that he resigned from his position in order to ensure broad consensus among Palestinians on political arrangements. In his statement to the cabinet, the Palestinian Prime Minister said, “The next stage will require a new government and political arrangements taking into account the reality in the Gaza Strip, the need for national unity talks, and inter-Palestinian reconciliation. In addition, it will require the expansion of the Authority’s jurisdiction over all Palestinian territories.”
For Shtayyeh’s resignation to take effect, it requires approval from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who may request Shtayyeh to continue in his position until a new appointment is made.
