Riyad Mansur, the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations (UN), announced that the Palestinian administration is requesting a vote within the UN Security Council this month to grant Palestine full membership in the UN.

Palestine aims to become a full member of the United Nations. Riyad Mansur, the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN, stated that the Palestinian administration is requesting a vote within the UN Security Council this month to grant Palestine full membership in the UN. Mansur said their goal is for the Security Council to make a decision during the ministerial meeting on the Middle East scheduled for April 18. Mansur stated that although a vote has not yet been scheduled, Palestine’s full membership application, submitted in 2011, is still pending as the Council, with its 15 members, has not officially made a decision.

For a full membership application to the UN, the Security Council, where the US holds veto power, must approve it, followed by at least two-thirds of the 193-member UN General Assembly.
