Former Prime Minister Khan and Foreign Minister Qureshi sentenced to 10 years in prison in Pakistan
In Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been sentenced to 10 years in prison in a case where they were accused of disclosing state secrets.
A decision has been reached in the trial where former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were accused of leaking state secrets in Pakistan. The court found former Prime Minister Khan guilty of abusing classified telegrams, sentencing him to 10 years in prison. Former Minister Qureshi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison. The decision was conveyed orally to Khan and Qureshi, who are currently in Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi. Seyit Zulkifar Buhari, the spokesperson for Khan’s Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI) party, stated that they would appeal the court’s decision, saying, “Our lawyers were not allowed to represent Imran Khan. What happened in court was just a farce and a sham.”
Khan had been accused of publicly revealing the contents of a classified telegram sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington and using it for political gain. Khan, however, argued that the telegram provided evidence that the U.S. pressured the military to overthrow the Pakistani government in April 2022 and denied the charges against him.
Arrested on August 5, 2023, Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan’s Prime Minister from August 2018 until losing a vote of confidence in the parliament in April 2022, was arrested on August 5, 2023, following a court order in the corruption case he was being tried for. The Pakistan Election Commission had decided on August 8 to ban Khan from politics for five years. While Khan’s three-year sentence in the corruption case was suspended on August 29, and he was released on bail, his detention period was extended in another case where he was accused of “disclosing state secrets” based on the prosecution’s request.
Former Foreign Minister Qureshi, on the other hand, was sent to prison on August 19, 2023.
