Farmers back on the streets in Greece
Farmers in Greece organized a protest in the capital Athens with their tractors.
Protests by farmers continue in Greece. This time, the destination for farmers was the capital Athens. Farmers gathered in Syntagma Square in the capital and parked their tractors in front of the parliament building. Farmers demanded reductions in high energy and production costs, easing of tax burdens, and compensation for damages caused by natural disasters. Some farmers placed “coffins” in front of their tractors, while others hung banners with expressions like “No farmers, no food, no future” and “Livestock died today.”
While unions have been negotiating with the government for weeks, no significant progress has been made so far. Farmers stated that they were in Athens to put pressure on the government, which proposed discounts on electricity bills and a one-year extension of tax refunds for agricultural diesel.
Police estimated that at least 8,000 farmers participated in the protest with 130 tractors.
