Defense Exercise on Border Islands by South Korean Army
The South Korean Army is focusing on ensuring security with a defense exercise conducted on the border islands. The army units are ready to respond to military threats in the region.
The South Korean military conducted a three-day defense exercise on the border islands and surrounding areas in the Yellow Sea. This exercise was carried out due to increased security concerns related to North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program. The exercise involved real shooting tests and counter-terrorism operations with elements from land, air, and sea forces.
Elements Used in the Exercise
- UH-60 and CH-47 helicopters
- F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets
- Warships of different sizes
Threats from North Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un had conducted hundreds of artillery firings north of the Northern Limit Line, the inter-Korean maritime border in the Yellow Sea, in recent months and had made nuclear attack threats. South Korea’s exercise was interpreted as a warning to North Korea.
“If South Korea violates our territories, airspace, or territorial waters by even 0.001 millimeter, we will consider it a provocation for war,” stated Kim, mentioning that his country would not recognize the Northern Limit Line.
