The cabinet led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to halt Al Jazeera’s activities in Israel in a vote held today. In April, a law was approved foreseeing the banning of broadcasts of some channels, including Al Jazeera based in Qatar, on the grounds that they “threaten national security.”
After the approval of the law, the Israeli government took the first step against Al Jazeera. The cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Netanyahu unanimously decided to stop Al Jazeera’s activities in Israel. There has been no official statement yet on when the decision will take effect.
In a statement on social media regarding the issue, Netanyahu said, “The government under my leadership has unanimously decided the following: Provocative Al Jazeera will be shut down in Israel.”
Decision to Take Immediate Effect
Israeli Communication Minister Shlomo Karhi announced on social media that the decision against Al Jazeera has been signed, stating, “The decision will take effect immediately. For months, I have done everything in my power to prevent Al Jazeera from operating in Israel, and I will continue to do so.”
