Ecuador-Mexico Relations: Embassy Raid Case
Detailed information about the embassy raid case in Ecuador-Mexico relations. Background of the incident, developments, and current analysis of the results.
Ecuador Government Defended Itself
The Ecuadorian government presented its oral defense in the case heard at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, regarding the embassy raid that caused a crisis in Mexico-Ecuador relations. The oral arguments of the parties in the case opened at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) came to an end after the Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5 and arrested Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum in Mexico.
Parties Accused Each Other
In the case brought by Mexico accusing Ecuador of violating international law by forcibly entering the Mexican Embassy in Quito, the parties accused each other. Representatives of the Ecuadorian government argued that the embassy raid was an unusual and isolated incident, rejecting the accusations of violating international law.
Mexico’s Provisional Measures Request
As part of the case, Mexico also requested the issuance of provisional measures from the judges of the International Court of Justice to protect Mexico’s diplomatic missions in Quito. Ecuador’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Teran, stated in today’s session that there was no need for provisional measures as Ecuador guaranteed the security of Mexico’s diplomatic missions and assets in the country.
While Mexico claimed that the Ecuadorian police crossed the line by using violence to enter the embassy and physically assaulting a diplomat, Ecuador accused Mexico of exploiting diplomatic asylum to obstruct justice. Former Vice President Glas, who has been convicted of corruption twice and faces other charges, had been staying at the Mexican Embassy in Quito since December last year. Shortly after Mexico granted asylum to Glas, the Ecuadorian police raided the embassy on April 5 and arrested Glas. Following this incident, Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador and filed a lawsuit at the ICJ on April 11, alleging that Ecuador violated diplomatic immunities.
