UN: “76 Rohingya Muslims died or missing in boat tragedy in Indonesia”
The United Nations (UN) announced that 76 people died or went missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off the coast of Indonesia.
A tragedy occurred as a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off the coast of Aceh, Indonesia. In a statement issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was reported that 76 Rohingya refugees died or went missing in the accident that occurred on Wednesday. The statement noted that 75 of the at least 151 people on board the boat had been rescued, and if confirmed, the death toll would be the highest number of casualties among Rohingya refugees this year. The UN statement also mentioned that the rescued refugees were in good health.
Fishermen were the first to reach the Rohingya refugees stranded on the overturned boat on Wednesday, and search and rescue operations were later initiated in the area.
Rohingya Muslims, who fled persecution in Myanmar and sought refuge in Bangladesh, set sail on boats to reach Indonesia.
