More than 100 staff working at the European Union (EU) institutions protested in the Belgian capital Brussels against Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the EU’s ineffectiveness on this issue.

What Happened at the Protest?

The protesters gathered at Schuman Square in the area where the EU institutions are located in the Belgian capital Brussels, and conducted a symbolic funeral ceremony with yellow cloths symbolizing blood-stained white shrouds. Participants supporting the demonstration left flowers in front of symbolic coffins inscribed with “International Law”, “European Union Treaties”, and “Genocide Convention”. One of the protesters stated that they came together to defend the principles and values on which the European Union institutions are founded. Emphasizing that they work in the EU institutions because they believe in human rights, human dignity, and freedom values, the protesters stressed that their aim is not to engage in politics but to defend European values.

  • Highlighting the violation of the Genocide Convention and the death of the values represented by Europe, the protesters observed a minute of silence for the Palestinians who lost their lives in the war in Gaza.
  • Manus Carlisle, one of the organizers of the protest, stated, “The peaceful demonstration was organized with the participation of hundreds of staff working in the EU institutions and surrounding institutions.”

There was no statement released by the European Commission regarding the protest.
